Kinked crack paths in polycarbonate samples printed by fused deposition modelling using criss-cross patterns

Additive manufacturing is unquestionably gaining importance in industry. Due to the layer by deposit process, it usually leads an anisotropic material. A question of whether Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics can be used assess their resistance fracture. In this paper, we investigate point on polycarbonate printed Fused Deposition Modelling focusing a criss-crossed pattern. Thanks tensile and fracture experiments instrumented Digital Image Correlation, material evidenced linear elastic until fracture, nearly isotropic 2D printing plane but with strong anisotropy, leading systematic crack kinking along weakest plane. The Stress Intensity Factors evolution measured across kink shown agreement Amestoy-Leblond’s formula. toughness observed larger than bulk value, irreversible damage plasticity that are clearly observable at scale threads.
